What is a "Market Cap" in crypto?

Ways Market Capitalization Can be Manipulated

  • Price manipulation: Market cap can be artificially inflated by manipulating the price of a cryptocurrency. This can be done through tactics such as wash trading, spoofing, or other forms of market manipulation.
  • Token creation: Some cryptocurrency projects may create additional tokens or coins, either through mining or other methods, which can artificially increase the total supply of the cryptocurrency and decrease its market cap.
  • Fractional reserve banking: Some cryptocurrency projects may engage in fractional reserve banking, which involves only holding a fraction of the assets that are promised to investors. This can artificially inflate the market cap of the cryptocurrency as it essentially increases leverage.
